Carpet Cleaning and Maintenance Advice

Cleaning & Maintenance

The secret to effective maintenance is to prevent loose dirt and dust particles from infiltrating the carpet pile, where they can exert abrasive action on the fibres and cause discolouration.

Here are some of our useful tips and advice:

  • Vacuum regularly, at least 2-3 times a week.
  • A substantial doormat will help minimise the spread of dirt from outside throughout the house.
  • Removing shoes at the front door will reduce the impact of daily wear and tear.
  • If possible, avoid placing light-coloured carpets near external entrances.

Vacuum Cleaning

Man-made and wool carpets should be vacuumed regularly as soon as they are laid.

Loop Pile Carpet

Vacuum loop pile carpets using a cylinder cleaner, using the suction head only. Avoid using beater heads and brushes, as they can catch and lift the fibres, leading to a bobbled or felted appearance over time.

Cut Pile Carpet

Ideally, vacuum cut pile carpets with an upright vacuum cleaner equipped with a beater bar and brush. Alternatively, a cylinder vacuum cleaner with a similar attachment can be used.

Soft Deep Pile Carpet

For soft, deep, cut pile carpets, we recommend a vacuum cleaner with an adjustable height. This ensures proper airflow over the pile surface during cleaning.

Stain Removal

In a busy household with a young family, pets, or frequent visitors, spills and stains can occur at any time. The good news is that carpets can be easily cleaned by following the recommended guidelines below:

  • Address spillages and stains immediately; don't delay or allow them to dry.
  • Blot away all liquid with kitchen towel or a clean white, dry cloth.
  • Remove semi-solid substances with a plastic spatula.
  • Avoid vigorous rubbing or over-soaking the carpet.
  • Always work from the outside of the stain inwards to minimize spreading.
  • To clean any remaining stains, blot with a clean, damp cloth soaked in warm water.

For our easy-clean, polypropylene carpets, a solution of bleach and warm water can be used. Dilute one part bleach to ten parts water.

Note: Do not use this on wool carpets and take care not to over-soak the carpet. Repeat if required or contact a professional cleaner if more persistent stains remain.
